Garage Door Spring Replacement in Myrtle Beach
A broken spring is the most common garage door emergency on the Grand Strand and the one most worth leaving to someone with the right tools. It is also one of the more predictable repairs to price.

Torsion or extension: which you have
Look at the wall above the door, inside the garage.
Torsion springs
One or two large coiled springs on a steel shaft that runs across the top of the door. Most two-car doors in Carolina Forest, the Market Common and the newer subdivisions inland have these. When one breaks you see a gap in the coils, and you usually heard it go.
Extension springs
Long springs running along the horizontal tracks on each side, parallel to the ceiling, with a cable through a pulley. More common on older single-car doors, including some in Pine Lakes and the older streets of Conway. They should have a safety cable running through the middle of each spring; if yours do not, that is worth fixing when the springs are replaced, because an extension spring that snaps without one becomes a projectile.
Why springs fail sooner near the beach
Every spring has a cycle rating, and the common builder-grade torsion spring is rated somewhere around ten thousand cycles. In a house that uses the garage as its main entrance that can be seven or eight years. On the oceanfront blocks it is often less, because salt air rusts the coils and rust adds friction and starts cracks. You can hear it: a rusty spring squeaks and grinds as the door moves, and a dry, orange-coated spring on a door that is ten years old is near the end of its life. A light coat of garage-door spring lubricant a couple of times a year slows that down, which is the cheapest maintenance there is for a coastal door.
What a proper spring replacement includes
The new springs should be sized to the door, not just matched to whatever came off it. The springs on a door that has been repaired before are not always right, and a heavy insulated or wind-rated door needs a heavier wire than a hollow steel one of the same size. A technician should weigh or calculate the door, choose a wire size, inside diameter and length that suit it, wind them to the right number of turns, and then test the balance with the opener disconnected. While the door is unloaded, it is the right moment to look at the cables, the drums, the bottom brackets and the centre bearing, because they were all under the same tension and are usually the same age.
Standard or high-cycle springs
A high-cycle spring uses a longer or thicker wire so that each cycle stresses it less. It costs more up front and lasts considerably longer, often two or three times the cycle rating of a standard spring. For a rental that sees a new family every week in July, or a household that is in and out of the garage all day, it is usually the better value. For a second home used a few weeks a year, the spring is more likely to rust out than wear out, and a standard spring with regular lubrication is fine.
Do not try this one yourself
Torsion springs are wound with winding bars into a cone that holds the tension. A screwdriver slipping out of that cone at full wind is how people get hurt, and the bottom brackets on the door are under the same load. If a spring has broken, leave the door closed if you can, pull the opener's emergency release so nobody tries to run it, and call.
Call for a spring replacement. A broken spring is usually a same or next business day job, and the company can tell you on the phone what to check so the price is close before they arrive.
Common questions
How much does spring replacement cost in Myrtle Beach?
Local companies generally quote $250 to $450 for a pair of torsion springs on a standard two-car door, including labour, and somewhat less for a single spring. High-cycle springs, very heavy doors and rusted shafts or drums that have to be replaced at the same time push it higher.
Can I keep using the opener with a broken spring?
No. The opener is not built to lift the door's full weight, and running it strips the drive gear or bends the top panel. Disconnect it until the spring is replaced.
How long should new springs last?
A standard spring is commonly rated around ten thousand cycles and a high-cycle spring two to three times that. Near the ocean, rust shortens both. Lubricating them a couple of times a year helps.
Why does the new spring look different from the old one?
Often because the old one was wrong for the door. Springs are chosen by door weight and height; a mismatch shows up as a door that drops or creeps up when you let go of it.
Is a broken extension spring dangerous?
It can be if there is no safety cable through it, because the spring can whip loose when it snaps. If your extension springs have no cable through the middle, ask for one when they are replaced.
